I went to the library for the first time in a while whilst applying for the BFI/BBC funding (didn’t get it) and stumbled across this book all about Alexander Calder. I had only seen his mobiles but his graphic work and jewellery are so beautiful!

I love the way all the lines have such great movement and weight to them, even the ring.
I love these poster designs by Jan Lenica. The second one could be helpful when I am figuring out how to add simple backgrounds. I have found a paper texture that I like if I don’t have time for backgrounds or for shots that don’t need one. It could also be the base for other parts of the background. It seems to add a warmth to the film which I like.
Noemi from the first year did some test with a few of my hand drawn backgrounds. I need to think more about the colour palette but I have decided to keep the character see through so you see the background instead of white. Noemi’s tests help me to figure that out.
For now I am going to get the animation of the line finished and then start doing the backgrounds so that the composer and sound designer have something to work with timing wise as well and also incase I need to make changes to the animation last minute… hopefully not many!
I am going to reference this painting again – 1927 ‘seaside resort in the south of france’ Paul Klee because I love the patterns and colours so much and would like to keep them in mind when doing my backgrounds.
It is the last day of term tomorrow and we are all showing our work so far on our graduation films. I think i am doing ok… These are some drawings I did the other day when experimenting for backgrounds and textures that could be scanned in.
I am still not happy with the opening shot of my film but I think I have time to figure out a new one.
I watched Renata Gąsiorowska’s film ‘pussy’ again and it is so great! There was a bit where she melts nicely onto the sofa which could be a helpful reference for the mother melting in my film. The simple visual design and sound design work so well!

Since Marian introduced me to celine devaux and I watched ‘sunday lunch’ I can’t stop looking at her work. The whole film was full of interesting transitions and all the shots were so well thought out. I am trying to take some inspiration when thinking about composition.
Animating has now begun. I am slowly getting back into it. This animation above by Gil Alkabetz uses textures nicely. I am not sure how the characters are made but the silhouetting in all his films is great.
I love this opening so much. I am definitely not happy with my opening yet but I am going to keep going ahead with my film and go back to it.
I need to start animating this week. I am still unsure whether the ending will be the daughter pregnant or just end on the shadow of the mum coming to be with the daughter. I still need to sort out a log line and would like a clear one in the next week or so so I can tell people clearly what is is about but in an interesting way. It is about a mother daughter relationship, loss and how even when people are gone they are still with you… in your shadows.
I am reconsidering using the eyes in the way i did before because It just never quite worked how I wanted it to. Instead I am considering stretching parts of the body like we did in our paint on glass project very much inspired by caroline leaf – like movements. instead of moving the whole body – just the part doing something moves.
I need to distinguish between the daughter and mothers eyes. The mother will have three eyelashes and the daughter no lashes.
Here are some ideas for the scene of time passing when the mother is waiting for her daughter or longing for her and missing her. Like the bedtime story at the start of this post and the one above – I would really like to use black in a few of the scenes. I really like the effect it has on a scene. The grief section could definitely have this darkness. The image below is an attempt to make the shadow after the grief but I am not happy with how it looks yet.
I love this Klee painting which uses a black background and colour really well.
i just found this old drawing. it was to accompany a story a friend had written. I used to draw long necks a lot, big ears (not in this one) and also draw more scratchily with ink. perhaps some of these elements can come back in. I am not quite happy with a new bits in my film yet and some of the movements.
I have been looking again at Hokusai’s manga for inspiration. His movement and imagination in reality is so beautiful.
I am still trying to work out exactly what my film will look like. I would like to make it hand drawn. I am trying out acrylic paint, oil pastels, gauche, ink, colouring pencils and normal pencils and i will hopefully find a solution. Above are some character designs for ‘mum’ (working title). On the left the mother and on the right the daughter. I think the daughter will have a sort of mushroom like body to distinguish her from the curvier mother. I would like the whole film to be rounded, warm and friendly feeling. Below are a few visual references. Japanese Hiragana which is like for its roundedness and a painting I did which I like for it’s colours. I am going to test out doing a similar colour palette for my film.
Below are some more tests for the film. I still have lots of tests to do.
I think I naturally enjoy using ink so I think I should use a mixture of ink and paint but need to work out if I need to draw it all in pencil first.
Another thing I have been thinking about is the different locations in the film to try and clear up in my head where the different things will take place.

Today we have our reference footage recording which was really helpful. Everyone helped me develop my ending and bring to life a few of the scenes. Here is a picture of Helena being the mum and me being the daughter who is upset but then mum takes her eyes up to the sky to see something beautiful.

For the scene where the mother is sitting in the window and is sad, Helena was really helpful and her acting has given me some ideas for facial expressions…
Sacha’s film has a scene with dancing food which was very enjoyable to act out.

the shadow is the colour the we have got to know the mum as throughout the film
the shadow also has blinking eyes like the ones we saw on the mother throughout
the daughter gradually becomes less sad/camera angle becomes more positive/straight on
the daughter lifts her hand from her belly and we see that she is pregnant
she looks down at her baby perhaps with a suggestion that she is pondering how she used to be the baby and her relationship with her mother. she is now the mother.

I saw this Hiroshige painting for the first time this week. I find it very calming and satisfying!
Off to the RCA work in progress show this afternoon. Hopefully some inspiration for my film if I go ahead with hand drawing it.
I went to see the film ‘get out’ this evening. It was very funny and also terrifying. Above is a shot of the chasm that characters enter when they are hypnotised. It is so effective and made me feel a bit sick actually. The sudden hopelessness of the character once in this space-like world worked so well. I think this is the sort of feeling I would like the audience of my film to get when the loss happens. The sense of hopelessness.
I just watched this short animated film called ‘stitches in time’. It is so charming and I love the flowing lines that turn into their memories. The line flows amazingly. I like the part where the kite turns into another scene of them through a window. The yarn turns into all kinds of things and is very pleasing to watch.
I found this drawing by Louise Bourgeois this evening. It is called ‘umbilical chord’. I would like to read more/look at more of her work as a point of reference.
